Rapper Chinx, born Lionel Pickens, has been killed as he sat in a Porsche in an early morning drive-by shooting.
31-year-old Chinx was shot multiple times in the chest and he died in hospital.
The rapper was part of French Montana's Coke Boys group.
The attack unfolded at 4am in the Jamaica neighbourhood of the city's Queens borough.
Police said Chinx and another man were in the car when a vehicle pulled up alongside and an attacker opened fire.
At least seven bullet holes pierced the front and rear driver-side windows of the silver Porsche Panamera 4.
The 27-year-old passenger in the car with Chinx is in a critical condition in hospital with gunshot wounds.
Chinx's management team issued a statement on Instagram saying his "dedication, humour and vision will always be remembered".
The rapper made his name through the Coke Boys and Cocaine Riot mixtape series.
In 2009, he released his first solo album, Hurry Up & Die Vol 1: Get Ya Casket On.
No arrests have yet been made.
