68-year-old Nomandla Khanyile (68) from Molweni Village, near Pinetown, west of Durban, was buried under toilet rubble for almost four hours on Wednesday.
She had gone to relieve herself but when she sat down in the pit toilet, the seat collapsed, the floor collapsed and she plunged down into the four-metre-deep toilet that hadn't been cleared for months.
Nomandla is currently in hospital, fighting for her life after sustaining serious injuries to her back and lower abdomen.
Her niece Zandile Zondi (25) said she can't believe the old lady made it out alive.
"We heard a huge bang outside. It sounded like gun shots," she said.
"Everybody from the neighbourhood came out. We heard her crying. We looked around but we couldn't see her. Then we realised the voice was coming from under the rubble."
Brave men from the village started a rescue mission that took almost four hours.
"The municipality must do something about this," said Zandile.
"The toilets were built 10 years ago when the houses were built and they have become dangerous.
"Aunt Nomandla had renovated hers by laying floor tiles and painting the walls. She almost didn't see the funeral service of Nelson Mandela."
Zandile said no police or paramedics came to the scene.
Ward 9 councillor Sithembiso Mchunu said she was out of the province when she heard about the incident.
"I will try and get the municipality to help Nomandla get a new toilet. I haven't seen her and I don't know how badly injured she is but I'm happy that she's alive," said Sithembiso.
