A video has emerged of the moment a pram carrying a toddler rolled onto train tracks at Diamond Creek station in Melbourne's north-east.
A man, believed to be the toddler's grandfather, looked away for a matter of seconds to tap off his Myki card when the pram started to roll down a sloping platform, gathering momentum as it neared the edge.
The little girl, just 18 months old, then toppled over the platform edge, plunging head first onto the tracks below.
The noise of the crashing stroller startled the distracted man into action.
He frantically jumped onto the rail lines to retrieve the pram as his four-year-old grandson trailed behind.
He was helped by other bystanders as they scrambled to pull the toddler to safety.
The toddler was taken to Royal Children's Hospital where she was being treated for facial injuries suffered in the fall.
Metro spokeswoman Larissa Tait said: "There was no train in either direction for some time, thankfully.
"The fall from the platform is almost a metre, so that could cause a serious injury.
We're very relieved the girl only had minor injuries and that it wasn't more serious."
