The body of a baby was exhumed at a rural hospital in South Africa.
A forensic team along with cops conducted the exhumation at an open space within the premises of Madwaleni Hospital.
According to Xolile Gabada, the hospital's outgoing board chairman, cleaners allegedly found a dead baby in a cardboard box inside the hospital in June.
It is not yet clear how the baby ended up there.
Gabada said: "The cleaners said they informed management and a decision was made to bury the baby. Some staff members said they saw the baby being buried and were told to keep quiet about it. Eventually the news spread and reached me.
"I approached traditional leaders, who told the police. People are angry that such a thing could happen."
Health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said: "Our policy is that stillborn babies are given to the family. If relatives don't want the body, it's given to the municipality for a pauper's funeral.
"We are investigating the circumstances surrounding a burial, which took place inside the hospital premises. Disciplinary action will be taken."
Police spokesman Major Zamukulungisa Jozana said a baby's body was dug up and forensic tests will reveal more information.
