A murder suspect has been taken into custody on the strength of some 'innocent' pictures.
One of the pictures showed the man sitting on the pavement across the road and he did not realise he was in the photographs.
He was later identified as the angry ex-lover of the dead child's mother. The man had threatened that he would do bad things if the woman left him.
The suspect went to the house in Meadowlands, Soweto, where the little girl was visiting her grandmother and sat outside the gate.
As he sat there, he was accidentally captured on cellphone camera by teens who were taking photos of each other.
The 31-year-old mum of the girl identified the mysterious man in the photograph as her ex-lover.
The child's grandmother said she saw the man sitting across the road facing her house on Sunday at about 4pm.
"We asked each other what was he doing there because he was looking straight into my yard," she said.
She said her granddaughter was eating with the other kids and went to empty her plate in the dustbin near the gate.
"She ran back inside, quickly put down her plate and ran outside again.
"We didn't pay much attention and thought she would soon come back," said the grandmother.
"But when she hadn't come back after about 15 minutes we went searching for her. We ran in all directions but we couldn't find her.
"We went to the police station to report her missing," said the grandmother.
Her body was found in a room in Dube Hostel, not far from the house, on Monday.
The broken-hearted mother said she dumped her ex in January this year after his other girlfriend threatened her with violence.
"He has been stalking me ever since, begging me to come back to him even though I told him I did not want to be in a relationship," she said.
The 38-year-old man has been taken into custody and a murder case has been opened.
Sergeant Octavia Thebe of Meadowlands police confirmed that a man was taken into custody and said the clothes he was wearing in the photo were found at his house.
A murder case has been opened and the cops are investigating.
