A woman from central Florida, US, fatally shot her 27-year-old daughter after mistaking her for a robber late Tuesday, police said.
The woman awoke to the sound of footsteps entering the home just before midnight and fired a single shot before she realised who she was firing on, St. Cloud police Sgt. Denise Roberts said in a statement.
Her daughter later died at a nearby hospital from the wound to her torso, according to a synopsis by local medical examiners.
Police are calling the death an "accidental shooting" as detectives investigate, Roberts told the Orlando Sentinel.
Police identified the victims but asked for their names not to be published because a member of the family has worked as an undercover narcotics officer.
The woman who died is the stepdaughter of the St. Cloud Police Department officer, policetold WRDQ-TV.
The officer, who has worked at the department since 1998, was also asleep in the home at the time of the shooting.
The officer is currently out on administrative leave, Roberts said. His wife, who has been hospitalised, told investigators she shot her daughter by mistake, the TV station reported. Detectives say the evidence supports her account at this point.
The State Attorney's Office will review the shooting after police submit their investigation.
