A woman who was stabbed in both eyes by a deranged boyfriend has regained her sight.
After about 10 surgeries at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, Julissa Marquez can now read, watch TV and go on walks with her beloved Shih Tzu mix, Meatloaf.
"I lived in darkness for so long, but he gave me hope," she said of her lead ophthalmologist, Dr. Ronald Gentile. "I am so thankful for him."
"I couldn't see. All I could feel was the heat," she said of the event that left her blind.
Cordero, who was charged with second-degree attempted murder, pleaded not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect in 2014 in relation to the attack and was committed to the custody of the Office of Mental Health.
Marquez has lost some peripheral vision in her right eye and needs strong glasses, but she can see enough to walk alone with only a cane to aid her balance and depth perception, she said.
Because the optic nerve was nearly severed on her left side, the surgeries in that eye were only able to restore her ability to see light and colour variations.
Marquez called Dr. Gentile a "godsend," while he praised her positive outlook.
"Most people with injuries are, 'I can't do this, I can't do that, the glass if half empty,'" Dr. Gentile said. "She is the opposite of that. She is like, 'I can do this. I can do this.'"
