An 86-year-old man was allegedly chained up and left starving inside a wooden shack by his wife for around two years in the small village of Huauyan, Peru.
Pablo Tamariz Coraquillo was found in a 'weak and bewildered' state after officials acted on rumours.
Villager Viviano Villareal Corral, 56, said: 'We knew he was there but his wife told us it was for his own good.
'She said he kept trying to run away and she decided the best way to keep him at home was to tie him up.
'But we didn't realise that he was there all the time. We just thought it was now and then.'
A spokesman for the local region authorities said: 'When we heard about the man in chains we sent a tram down to investigate and discovered him in a shack on the outskirts of the village.
'He was very weak and slightly bewildered to see us.
'He has now been taken to hospital and we are trying to find some social housing for him.'
