Former Northumbria Police chief constable Mike Craik was punched at a barbecue by a colleague after he discovered Mr Craik had an affair with his wife and fellow high-ranking cop, a tribunal has heard.
Assistant chief constable Carolyn Peacock was allegedly cheating on former chief superintendent Jim Peacock with her boss, Mr Craik - which led to Mr Peacock attacking Northumbria Police's ex-chief constable at a cook-out in 2007.
The allegations were aired at a tribunal examining Denise Aubrey's claim she was wrongfully sacked from the force.
The former head of legal services was fired for gross misconduct, accused of spilling the beans on the affair between the two high-ranking officers at a staff meeting in 2013.
Their names can now be revealed after reporting restrictions were withdrawn.
The crisis-hit police force accused of affairs and punch-ups between senior officers has been hit by allegations of a second extra-marital relationship.
Aubrey said that Craik lied to her about the tryst when he sought advice on how to deal with rumours of the bust-up.
Miss Aubrey was suspended in July 2013 and later sacked.
She claims senior officers including current chief constable Steve Ashman exposed her to sexism and bullying.
Miss Aubrey said she was referred to as "sex on legs" and "sex on a stick."
Mr Craik and the Peacocks will not give evidence to the tribunal. They deny an affair or that the bust-up happened.
The hearing continues.
