A girl falsely accused her father of raping her, basing the stories on Fifty Shades Of Grey.
Because of this it only took seven minutes of cross examination for barrister Cathy McCulloch to extract an admission from her.
Writing in a blog post for Church Court Chambers, McCulloch explained that her client had been charged with eight counts of incestuous rape taking place over a six-year period.
Apparently, the father 'had absolutely no real defence other than "I did not do it"'.
'The complainant's interview was going to be really tough to crack,' the barrister wrote. 'She had described not only what her father had allegedly done, but how her body felt as a result.
'The only odd thing was the use of certain words, phrases and descriptions of how she felt which seemed beyond her years.'
McCulloch didn't think anything of this, until her client mentioned his daughter's favourite book, Fifty Shades Of Grey by E.L. James.
It was 'about a millionaire who takes a young woman under his wing and "teaches her about art"', she wrote. 'He had no idea what Fifty Shades Of Grey was about.'
Neither McCulloch nor her instructing solicitor had read Fifty Shades before, so she stayed up all night poring over a copy – finding a number of similarities between the girl's police interview and the book, 'too many… to be a coincidence'.
'She had made the whole thing up because she was angry with her father and wanted to teach him a lesson.
'I asked her whether she had got all the ideas from Fifty Shades Of Grey. She confirmed this book, and others – which she named. After seven minutes we were finished.'
When directing the jury to acquit her client, the judge described the case as 'unique' in the whole of his career.
