A 31-year-old woman was confronted in Union Square, US, by a laughing man who tried to burn her arm with a lighter, the latest in a series of the bizarre attacks, police sources said Thursday.
The woman managed to avoid injury, apparently because a witness yelled out when the suspect was seen trying to set fire to her arm outside the subway station.
The suspect smiled and laughed, then ran.
The woman didn't contact police until Monday.
The creepy assault is now being investigated as part of a pattern of six incidents that started the same night.
The Hate Crimes Task Force at first thought the suspects — believed to be several teens — were motivated by a hatred of Muslims because the first victim was a Muslim woman from Scotland.
Police now say the suspects are targeting women in general.
