A UK charity has warned rape victims in Dubai and the UAE not to report them after a British woman was arrested for 'extramarital sex' after she was attacked.
While the victim's alleged attackers, both of whom are British, have flown back to Birmingham, she was arrested after reporting the incident and charged with 'extra-marital sex'.
Now, Detained in Dubai has warned people about reporting such incidents.
Radha Stirling, the charity's founder, told the Independent: 'We get people contacting us asking whether they should report a crime and – whether it be a rape or anything else – I often say no. Absolutely not.
'It's about the laws for one, but it also comes down to the application of the law. Police there do get a lot of rape claims that are false, many of which come from disgruntled prostitutes who retaliate by reporting false criminal claims.
'Because of this the police are wary of false accusations, so when a report does come in they think, “Oh, maybe the girl was just drunk and then she regretted it the next day”.'
She added that the clubbing scene is growing in Dubai and the perception is that women who are drunk are 'asking for it'.
Her mother said that her daughter needs £30,000 in legal fees and has started a gofundme page to help her.
The woman was on a five-day holiday last month when the attack happened.
She met the two men at the hotel they were all staying at – but they lured her to a room, took turns raping her, and filmed it, it is claimed.
It is feared she could be jailed under the United Arab Emirates' strict laws, which states that sex outside marriage is banned.
The Foreign Office is aware of the case and is working to support the woman and her family.
